This research project examines agribusiness risks in Pacific Island countries (Fiji, Vanuatu and Tonga) and seeks to develop a risk minimization and mitigation framework with appropriate strategies to address identified risks.
With Pacific Islands agriculture critical for lives and livelihoods, we've explored the success factors and constraints that underpin agricultural development and agribusinesses in the region.
Module 5 provides an overview to help you appraise the market opportunities and marketing for breadfruit. It is important to have an appreciation of the value chain in which you would be involved. There are likely to be several different breadfruit value chains in which your breadfruit could be sold.
Module 3 contains an overview of what is needed to maintain a smallholder breadfruit agroforestry orchard, including planting, mulching and irrigation, maintenance (including pruning), nutrient management, pests and diseases, harvesting and risk assessment.
Module 1 gives an insight into the breadfruit tree, the diversity of varieties that exist, and the basics of traditional breadfruit agroforestry. It also highlights issues you will have to consider before embarking on your breadfruit agribusiness – these issues will be looked at in more detail in later modules.
Until recently, experiential tourism was thriving globally, and with more adventurous travellers likely to be the first to return is there an opportunity to tap into this growing market?
Module 6 is where you use the information from the previous modules to decide if you want to proceed with a breadfruit agribusiness and what form it will take, for example do you want to be involved in any additional value-adding activities along the breadfruit product value chain.
Module 4 gives an insight into how mature and ripe fruit can be processed into shelf-stable products, such as chips and other snacks, and other value-added products, expanding the use of breadfruit as a food and also creating marketing opportunities
Module 2 contains an overview of needs when establishing a smallholder breadfruit agroforestry orchard, including site evaluation and preparation, choice of varieties, spacing and complementary / cover crops.
